Mr. Flu, Not Today!
The Temperature is Rising
Last Sunday evening, my little one started running a low-grade fever. I didn’t think much of it until her temperature spiked and I thought oh no. Knowing the flu was beginning to make its way around our school I wasted no time. I called her pediatrician right away, she took my call immediately, and she gave me overnight instructions after I explained Helena’s symptoms. With that, she said, “I’ll see you in the morning.”
We arrived at Dr. Fox’s office and were quickly taken back without seeing another child. Yet another reason I love Dr. Fox. In 4 years, I maybe have crossed paths with 1 other family while visiting. The sweet nurse took us back and took all of Helena’s updated information. In addition, she swabbed Helena’s nose for the flu.
It's the Flu, Type A
Dr. Fox, soon thereafter, walked in and said, “We know what it is. It’s the flu.” Type A as it turns out and the same strand of the flu that had been circling our school.
Dang, it got us. And I mean us because the flu is highly contagious.
I admit, I’d rather an antiviral medication that an antibiotic. Helena started a round of Tamiflu but that was only some of the picture.
Mr. Flu, Not Today!
I had kick it into high gear for my husband and I not to contract the flu. Helena is 4. She’s in our bed, she coughs, sneezes, and whatever else on us as we care for her. You get the picture. As holistic as I am, I was skeptical we would skate out unaffected. But that didn’t stop me. I made a plan and every day while the flu was alive and well in my home I stayed the course.
Here is my disclaimer:
I am the farthest person from a medical doctor. I am a mom who didn’t want to get the flu. I believe that my and my family’s health is my responsibility. I do what I can to prevent illness and maintain optimal health with food, plants, herbs, and oils.
Please consult with your doctor and use this course at your own risk. Do your research. It's your body after all.
Your Health is Worth It!

NO SUGAR! (the flu loves sugar)
We washed our hand constantly
I ran the air purifier
I washed the sheets daily and sprayed the doorknobs and other highly traveled areas in our home with Lysol
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FOOD IN YOUR STOMACH BEFORE TAKING ANY SUPPLEMENTS AND DON'T DO ALL OF THIS AT ONCE. SPREAD IT OUT OVER THE COURSE OF THE DAY.
Yes, it’s a lot of stuff; however, Tim nor I got the flu and it was in our bed for at least 3 nights. I am not advocating that everyone who has the flu or is around should take and do all of these things. And I certainly don't advocate doing all of this all of the time. Who could keep up? It's a lot of work. This is just what I did to keep the flu at bay. This momma was not getting sick for Christmas.
As for my little one, she continued to take her multi-vitamin and probiotic. I added elderberry syrup and zinc to her regimen. These are sold over the counter and formulated for children. She benefited from the oils in the air, the soup and she didn’t have any sugar. She rebounded in 2 days.
All and all, it wasn’t bad but certainly not ideal. Will I get the flu shot next time, no. I’d rather this route. Not to mention, some of our friends got the shot and were down the same amount of time as Helena.
Was all of this overkill? Maybe, but at this point I am just happy my family is well for Christmas.
